Haiti is a country in the Caribbean region and the third largest by area as well. This home of Taino people was discovered by Columbus only to mistake it for India or China. The island was then claimed by Spain and then By the French who established sugarcane plantations. This colony became the richest one in the world with African slaves working in the plantations. Haiti became the first independent country of the Caribbean and Latin America as well. In the Americas, this happens to be the only state in history which was successfully established by a slave revolt as the forces of Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated. This founding member of United Nations required UN intervention when over 250,000 people were killed in an earthquake.
